GREEN BAY, Wis. — Enrollment has begun in the Farmers for Sustainable Food Climate-Smart Program, which uses data to inform how farming practices can potentially generate added value for the food the farms produce.
Edge Dairy Farmer Cooperative and Farmers for Sustainable Food held a Climate-Smart informational webinar earlier this month. The webinar offered insight into the group’s multi-year USDA’s Partnership for Climate-Smart Commodities Program, including the different levels of farmer involvement.
FSF’s Managing Director Lauren Brey shared program details and answered attendee questions, explaining how farmers can help connect the supply chain by sharing data with downstream partners.
“Our projects enable unique connections to the processor in the supply chain so that you can monetize the farmer’s data and the work they’re doing on their farms,” Brey said.
Based on the Framework for Farm-Level Sustainability Projects created nearly three years ago by FSF and other partners, the program is data-driven and does not require any practice changes.
“Farmers have the opportunity to speak with experts so they can better understand their data and talk about what that means for their farm’s goals,” Brey said.
Farmers can receive up to $9,000 in annual stipends based on participation level, and farms of all sizes are welcome to participate.
A recording of the webinar can be viewed on the Farmers for Sustainable Food website, farmersforsustainablefood.com, or their YouTube channel for those who were unable to attend.
Farmers interested in enrolling should send an email to climate-smart@voiceofmilk.com.
