MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — If you’re planning to dig in your yard this spring, make the call to 811 first.
Alliant Energy spokesperson Chris Caporale says the call is free, and crews will respond within a couple of days to ensure your work can proceed safely
“They’ll come out, mark all your underground lines. And that could be their gas lines, electric lines, to just make sure everyone’s safe,” said Caporale. “You don’t want to hit any of those and not be aware of where they are in your yard.”
Once the lines are marked, you can proceed safely.
Use hand tools if you must dig within 18 inches of marked lines. Hitting a buried gas line or electrical cable could cause a leak or electrocution, so it’s essential to call 811.
